Every time you purchase a power tool it is always covered with a waxy and think coating to prevent the rust from eating up your power tools and this is known as cosmoline. In order for us to protect the cast irons we need to coat them again to keep the moisture away . Buying commercially used rust preventive stuffs can be the one of the easiest way to do it . Two common brands are Empire Top Saver and Boeshield T-9.These 2 products are used the same way, by spraying and rubbing it down all over the cast iron making sure to wipe off the excess, this can be repeated every now and then.

The unfortunate reality of tool ownership is that despite every good intention, tools left unprotected will eventually develop rust. And we left it alone for a long time it will definitely damage the whole of it.

This is a jointer that is not kept well. You can already see the increase in sawdust that invites rust to settle. Give it 2 years more and this tool will need drastic care.

Steel wool is the most common tool that is used to remove rust formation , but the problem with this abrasive tool is if it can't reach the areas where there are still formation of rust. There are now newly created products that can do this job .

A product called Rust Free by Boeshield is a rust remover that quickly removes rust. This is great on large tools that can't be soaked on rust solutions . Just spray , wait 1 minute and wipe.. If there's still rust remaining you can use abrasive tools to remove it.

Now that the jointer is free from rust you may apply rust protection on it. If you examine the jointer you will see rust pits that is caused by rusts that was there before cleaning. No method of rust removal can fill in a rust pit once the rust has consumed the metal.

Using these products can be harmful, since rust removals are made of acids to remove the rust fast you should be able to use some protective clothing like goggles and gloves .

By following these methods of rust prevention and rust removal your cast iron power tools will last a lifetime.
